As a part of the modernization program, it was noted that four General Electric TF-39 engines were replaced with four General Electric CF6-80C2-L1F (F-138) commercial engines for the C-5 aircraft. This engine will enable much more cargo to be transported over longer distances and will provide a 22% increase in thrust, a 30% reduction in takeoff roll, and a 58% improvement in climb rate. The C-5A/B/Cs that underwent RERP modification became C-5M Super Galaxies after receiving new engines and other system modifications.
The C-5 fleet was also made quieter (Federal Aviation Administration Stage 4 Compliant) as a result of this modernization program, which also improved aircraft dependability and maintainability, preserved structural and system integrity decreased ownership costs, and increased operational capability well into the twenty-first century.
