In a significant achievement for the ‘Make in India’ and indigenization programs in the defense sector, Samtel HAL Display Systems (SHDS), a joint venture between Samtel Avionics Ltd. (SA) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), has delivered 1,000 units of indigenously manufactured Multi-Function Displays (MFDs) to HAL for integration into frontline Sukhoi 30 MKI aircraft. The development implies that 143 of the Indian Air Force’s planned fleet of 272 Sukhoi aircraft will now be equipped with India-made MFDs, a critical component of an aircraft cockpit.SHDS is also the only company in India to have received CEMILAC (Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification) Type Approval for MFDs. Samtel-HAL formed a joint venture in 2007 to address avionics requirements such as Test Benches and Systems for all IAF star platforms, both fixed and rotary wing. The journey began in 2004 when Samtel signed a contract with the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO, formerly known as DARE) to develop technology for Su-30 MFDs. Samtel was able to fully develop the technology after five to six years of arduous efforts, and HAL and the Ministry of Defence (MoD) planned to establish a center of excellence in the form of a JV to nurture this homegrown technology.
